Comfort Food…

Psalm 23

1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Focus on verse 4,  it’s rich :

  • Comfort is found because God WILL DEFEND us with His Rod and Staff.
  • Comfort is found because God WILL DISCIPLINE us with His Rod and Staff.
  • Comfort is found because God WILL LEAD us with His Rod and Staff.

I think the greatest perspective shift for me would have to be the 2nd Truth above.  I don’t typically find comfort in God’s Discipline, but i should because God’s Word points out that this is a benefit to only those God has adopted as His own…

Are there any other comforts you find in His ‘rod & staff’??

  • I heard (or read, I can't remember) a great teaching on the rod and the staff. I guess shepherd would yell at the sheep, and as they were getting to know his voice, he would direct them with the staff. And then after time, he would just use his voice, and they would know his voice, so they could follow it. But if for some reason the shepherd would yell at the sheep, over and over, and the sheep would continue to stray without the staff, then he would go get the sheep, bring it back, and break a leg with the rod. Then the sheep would be stuck next to the shepherd for sometime as it healed and at the end, the sheep would know the voice of the shepherd.

This is probably something that sheep farmers just know, but we're pretty oblivious to it. It makes sense/sucks/is comforting.
  • It is God's Mercy that Disciplines us.... It's God's PASSIVE WRATH that allows us to continue to live in sin... If you dont feel the disciplining rod of God Shepherding you... THAT SHOULD SCARE YOU TO DEATH...

That is so the thoughts that have been going through my head as of late! He disciplines because He loves and doesn't want us to be led astray (Hebrews 12:6, Revelation 3:19)
